About Us

In Mold: The War Within the Billings share their story of mold and chemical exposure, the ensuing illnesses, the medical misdiagnoses, and the near-fatal improper medical treatments, which, unfortunately, are experiences shared by many mold and chemical victims. Where the Billings’ story diverts from the masses’ is in their journalistic approach to researching solutions to remedy the deteriorating health of their family. Lee Ann has a BA in Journalism and Kurt is the author of two prior books.

After regaining their family's health, Kurt and Lee Ann Billings have championed for increased awareness and aid to improve the plight of the untold numbers of people sick from Katrina and Rita mold and chemical exposures. During a recent trip to Washington D.C., they met with Montana senators Max Baucus and Jon Tester (below), Louisiana Senator David Vitter (right), and Senator Mary Landrieu's legislative coordinator to discuss the spiraling negative health of Katrina and Rita victims that, thus far, remain unaddressed by legislative leaders. Illnesses caused by mold and chemical exposures incurred during and after a national disaster is a bipartisan issue that should be addressed by all governmental leaders.

Reviews of MOLD: The War Within

Have you ever left a doctor’s office and felt that his diagnosis and treatment recommendations were wrong?  You are 475 pages away from understanding with certainty that this exact scenario occurs every minute of every day for millions of patients, but most importantly after reading MOLD: The War Within, you’ll know why.  Read it all!  Upon completion, you will be empowered to better understand why no disease cure exists in America. Doctors simply do not learn in medical school what the Billings have documented!

I host the most widely distributed daily health talk show in America.  Upon coming home from Vietnam in 1971, I lived the words within the pages of this book for years and received no help whatsoever from the medical community. Rather, like so many ill Americans, I learned a most important lesson; I would have to learn why I continued to be sick on my own…or die trying. I had survived Vietnam and had no intention of dying a few months later in America.

The Billings offer an educational process, albeit technical at some points (out of necessity), that is truly second to none.  I challenge any doctor or researcher to read these pages and then discount, or challenge the obvious fungus link to disease.  I know that doctors are far too intelligent to challenge their own science books and medical journals referenced herein, but far too reluctant to delve into the root cause of suffering when treating peripheral symptoms has become so profitable.

My book on this very subject has become a best-selling book and there is good reason. It certainly is not my writing style or flow of literary eloquence, rather the public’s hunger for a simple explanation as to what had gone wrong with their health.  They made the book sell well, not me!   Many in the general public are finding themselves exactly where the Billings were post Katrina…sick and confused and without knowledge that their healers had no idea that fungus entering their lungs could cause such serious diseases and even death.

This book is not about Hurricane Katrina. Children born in hospitals today inhale some of the same molds that the Billings did.  This book expounds upon what happens when common sense and science merges—a rare occurrence indeed. Read the book with an open mind and you’ll finish it with an open smile.  Truly, an incredible science has been discovered!  Thanks Kurt and Lee Ann!

America's healthcare is on a collision course similar to the Titanic. In their book, Mold, The War Within, the Billings point out the tip of the iceberg. Every major chronic disease has now been associated with inflammation. This means that the immune system is activated in all these diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, joint diseases, Alzheimer's and even obesity. The organism responsible for that activation appears to be yeast organisms that overgrow in people with predispositions due to immune compromise. Yeast are part of the mold family. Katrina evacuees sickened by mold are the canaries in an American coal mine. Every health care professional needs to read this book and understand its implications

Mold: The War Within is one of the most comprehensive sources I have seen on the deleterious health effects of mold and the mycotoxins they produce.  Authors Kurt and Lee Ann Billings also discuss methods of testing for mold, and inform their readers as to how they healed themselves with natural therapies, after learning of the dangers inherent in using a pharmaceutical approach.

In my opinion, this book should be required reading for all medical students. But until the day medical education focuses on healing rather than promoting pharmaceuticals, it will be up to individuals to learn how to heal themselves.  In the case of toxic mold infections, the research has been done for you, as documented in Mold: The War Within.

I also suggest those interested go to

Mold: The War Within is exasperatingly eye-opening. It depicts the horrors of Katrina, but examines the much deeper issues of mold, fungi and toxins that are prevalent in our everyday lives. The details of Kurt ant Lee Ann Billings' personal struggle through the aftermath of Katrina make these dangers even more of a reality. Interviews with known experts are candidly scientific, stocked full of cold hard facts. I found this book a disturbing, but necessary, read.

Reviews of MOLD: The War Within

I have read MOLD: The War Within and it looks very nice. I think authors Kurt and Lee Ann Billings did a great job! The book will be of value to the lay person who might have just experienced a mold infestation, because it contains information from scientists who are active in the field and provides some of the latest up-to-date scientific information in the field of mold. Of further value are explanations, for the novice, of some of the techniques on the procedures that mold inspectors use to examine houses for mold.

The book Mold: The War Within by Kurt and Lee Ann Billings is truly outstanding. They personally learned what the flooding caused by Katrina meant to so many families. After months of trials and tribulations, they realized that their family was one among many who were faced with similar monumental challenges. They have written the ultimate “Why and How To” book that confirms the devastating changes that can occur in health and lives because of extensive exposure to molds, formaldehyde (in trailers), and other harmful pollutants. The scope of symptoms caused by such exposures is not fully appreciated by many in the medical profession. What results is that complaints can be misdiagnosed as psychological when they are classical cause-and-effect health responses. This book offers practical realistic help and suggestions so others who have been hurt will know what to do and where to go for the help and assistance they need. They explain why the Katrina fiasco and deception continues to be an open, oozing sore and how the illness and devastating results of the flooding will continue until our government faces the reality of what has happened and takes appropriate and humane action.

I edited Doug Haney's book on mold, Toxic Mold-Toxic Enemy, and wrote the foreword for Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker's book, Mold Warriors, along with Bianca Jagger, but I think the book, MOLD: The War Within, makes a significant contribution in a different way. Everyone who is concerned about their health in homes and offices should read MOLD: The War Within. I thank the authors, Kurt and Lee Ann Billings, for allowing to me to make a contribution.

MOLD: The War Within presents a completely unique look at the effects of human exposure to mold and other airborne contaminants. The reader will be amazed at the in-depth research that authors Kurt and Lee Ann Billings have accomplished and what they’ve learned about the health effects of mold exposure on them and their children.

In an unrelenting quest to heal themselves, the authors discovered and are providing the reader with practical solutions for post-exposure healing. What their research revealed is that the typical treatments administered by medical doctors did not work for them. They ultimately discovered their own alternative methods, which finally resulted in dramatic improvements in their health.

Their story presents a first-hand look at the devastating health problems the family suffered after exposure to mold and toxins in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and what they did to heal themselves.

This is a “must read” for anyone who suffers from exposure to airborne mold or toxins and serves as a warning to those failing to take seriously exposure to excessive mold contamination.

The style and format of MOLD: The War Within is very “user friendly.”  I feel like I am standing in the doorway of the Billings’ home having an enlightening conversation.  The multitude of references at the end of each chapter adds a great deal of credibility and turns the book into a collection of readings.  The transcripts of the interviews at the end of the book are going to be a great asset to readers.

Surprisingly, given the complex nature of the subject, MOLD: The War Within is an easy and fast read. Any layman will find it fascinating and informative. Readers are left with a greater understanding of and personal stake in natural disasters, even those that take place thousands of miles away.

The authors add a unique and personal touch by weaving their own Katrina story into the pages. They also exemplify what it means to be an American...turning their personal crisis into something from which others can benefit and questioning the motives of government and special interests.
